Discovery-Based Projects for First Year EE, CE, CS and EET Students

The deadline for 2008 Abstract submissions has passed. Please contact us with any questions.

The IEEE is issuing a call for projects to develop hands-on discovery-based projects for the benefit of first year students in Electrical Engineering (EE), Computer Engineering (CE), Computer Science (CS), and Electrical Engineering Technology (EET).

This call for participation is directed at educators of these students, and is a public invitation to submit project plans for consideration for full development. The technical areas of interest are:

Bioinformatics / Computational Biology / Systems Biology  Microelectronics and Nanotechnology
CircuitsNetworking
CommunicationsOperating Systems
Computer Hardware / ArchitectureParallel and High Performance Computing
Control / SystemsPower Electronics/Systems
CybersecuritySignal and Image Processing
Electromagnetics and OpticsSimulation (software)
Human-Computer InteractionSoftware Engineering

Important Note: For single person submissions, only one technical area can be selected. However, for a team submission (2-4 people), multiple technical areas (up to 4) can be selected.

Authors of completed projects will receive an award which includes:
  • a monetary award of $5000 USD.
  • an invitation to submit a manuscript describing the project to a special section of the IEEE Transactions on Education dedicated to RWEP projects and workshops.
  • an invitation to present the project at an IEEE-sponsored workshop.
  • a plaque and congratulatory letter.
Project Submission:  A Three-Stage Process

Project submission is a three-stage process. First, the proposer submits a one-page summary abstract. If accepted after review, the proposer is invited to submit a more detailed project proposal. If accepted after review, the proposer is invited to submit a full project for inclusion in the RWEP project library, which will be made available to the public through IEEE's University Education Portal.

Stage One: Abstract Submission

A one-page summary abstract that describes the project must be submitted by April 15, 2008.Deadline Extended April 30, 2008. A proposer may be the lead author on at most one abstract. The abstract must contain the following.
  1. Project title
  2. Introduction to the real-world contemporary technical problem solved or illustrated by the project
  3. Discussion of the benefit of the problem’s solution to society
  4. Description of the hands-on team-based project: what the students will do, what underlying EE, CE, CS, EET principles and concepts they will discover, what problem-solving strategies will be employed and what trade-offs will be observed
  5. One figure that illustrates the problem and its solution

Abstract Submission
